Start an artist email newsletter people choose to receive

Build a small permission-based mailing list around a clear promise, useful messages and an easy way to leave. A follower, ticket enquiry or collaborator email address is not automatically a newsletter subscription.

Decide what readers will receive

Choose a useful purpose: release notes with a short story, upcoming performances or occasional updates about the creative process. State a cadence you can realistically maintain. A focused promise makes it easier for a person to decide whether to subscribe and for you to judge which messages belong in the list. Avoid collecting extra information without a reason.

Treat permission as a recorded choice

Use an appropriate email tool and a clear signup explaining who sends the messages and what they contain. Keep a record of the signup wording, time and confirmation where relevant. Request only necessary details, protect the list and check the provider’s settings and terms before use. An address found online, in a contact export or in an old conversation does not itself establish permission.

Check the rules for your actual audience

Marketing and privacy requirements depend on the applicable jurisdiction, recipient and message. UK ICO guidance distinguishes consent requirements and limited exceptions under PECR; US FTC guidance sets commercial-email requirements including accurate sender information and opt-out. One country’s rule is not a global permission slip. This is a planning guide, not a legal compliance certification: check current requirements and obtain suitable advice where needed.

Prepare a welcome message

An illustrative message could say: “Thanks for choosing our release notes. We’ll send occasional music stories and release updates from this artist. Here is the recording you asked about. You can unsubscribe whenever you like.” Adapt the message to the actual promise and required sender details. Do not invent a voucher, offer, personal story or response guarantee to encourage signups.

Make each update worth opening

  • Use a subject that accurately describes the message.
  • Lead with one piece of useful context, such as how a song was recorded or where an approved live performance will happen.
  • Include one clear relevant listening or information link.
  • Check names, dates, rights and the destination on a phone-sized screen.
  • Use the appropriate sender identity and required details, with a functioning unsubscribe route.
  • Test with your own authorised address before sending to a real list.

Keep preferences and results honest

Act on unsubscribe requests and maintain the minimum records needed to avoid adding those people back accidentally. Do not turn the list into a bought contact file or send repeated requests to people who opted out. Opens and clicks can be incomplete or affected by email technology; compare them cautiously and separate a link click from a listener, buyer or royalty payment. Use the audience-review guide for the music side.

How this fits a DistroBolt release

A newsletter is an artist’s separate communication channel, not a confirmed bulk-email tool included in DistroBolt distribution. Connect the planned announcement with the release checklist and a relevant older recording when appropriate. Ask about separately scoped creative help if needed; no email software, campaign or audience result is included by implication.

Common questions

Can I add everyone who follows my artist profile?

A social follow does not automatically authorise an email newsletter. Use an appropriate, informed signup process.

Does this set up a mailing list or change DistroBolt’s privacy settings?

No. This guide explains preparation. Any tool setup, data collection or campaign needs its own appropriate decisions and permissions.
