DISTROBOLT ARTIST GUIDES
Compare mastering before and after at matched volume
Compare the pre-master and master at similar perceived volume before deciding what improved. A louder version can seem more impressive even when it does not better serve the music.
Choose the exact versions
Keep the approved source mix and returned master clearly labelled. Select matching passages and align playback so differences in arrangement or start time do not confuse the comparison. Do not compare a demo and a revised performance as if mastering alone caused every difference.
Match the review level
Use appropriate gain adjustment or a suitable comparison tool, then keep the monitoring setup stable. iZotope recommends level matching when referencing to avoid confusing loudness with tonal or dynamic improvements. This is a listening adjustment, not an instruction to overwrite either source file.
Evaluate specific musical questions
Listen for vocal clarity, low-end control, transient character and intended dynamics. Note exact times and observations rather than writing only louder or better. Example: check whether a chorus remains engaging at matched level without the vocal becoming harsh. Rest and revisit if listening fatigue makes the judgement unreliable.
Record approval or revision
Keep the comparison conditions, feedback, engineer response and exact approved export. Review the full master before delivery, not only the strongest passage. This guide does not analyse client files, provide a clinical hearing recommendation or guarantee that one measured level determines the best artistic result.
