DISTROBOLT ARTIST GUIDES

Choose useful reference tracks for a mastering brief

Choose reference tracks that communicate specific sonic goals for your mastering engineer. Explain what matters in each reference rather than asking for an exact copy of a different recording.

Select a small, relevant set

Choose examples with useful similarities in instrumentation, density or intended listening context. Record the actual version and a lawful listening link. One reference might explain vocal presence and another low-end restraint. A large unexplained playlist makes the brief harder to interpret.

Describe the desired attributes

Write short notes such as clear vocal focus, controlled bass or preserved drum transients, with relevant passages. Separate these goals from songwriting or arrangement differences that mastering cannot recreate. Avoid treating chart success or a famous artist’s name as a technical instruction.

Compare at matched levels

A louder reference can seem more impressive simply because of its level. iZotope recommends matching reference and working levels for meaningful comparison. Keep your own observations specific and let the engineer choose appropriate processing. Do not demand clipping or over-compression solely to match an unadjusted reference’s volume.

Share references lawfully and approve scope

Use authorised access or links rather than redistributing copies you have no right to share. Keep your own source master and the reference distinct in the handover. Confirm what the mastering order includes and who approves the result. This guide does not promise to reproduce another recording’s sound or guarantee a particular commercial result.
