How to release live recordings: permissions, files and version details

Treat a concert recording as a specific recording project. Confirm authority for the performance, songs and recording, prepare approved audio and identify the live version accurately before submitting it to DistroBolt.

Define the recording project

Decide whether you are releasing a full concert, selected songs or a separate live single. Record the performance date, actual track sequence, performers and the source recording. A phone clip, a multitrack session and an approved concert master are different assets. Keep the original sources privately and name the person responsible for the final release decision.

Review permission for the intended use

A concert booking or a recording file does not by itself settle every right needed for distribution. Check arrangements with the performers, recording producer, song rightsholders, venue or organiser and any other relevant party. The US Copyright Office distinguishes the recording from the underlying song; WIPO also explains the separate roles of authors, performers and recording producers. The applicable permissions depend on the agreements, jurisdiction and use.

For cover songs, licensed beats or borrowed audio, review cover-song preparation, beat licences and sample clearance as relevant. Do not assume a permission for the concert also clears the distributed recording or a video.

Prepare the listening experience

  • Listen through the approved final export, including applause, transitions and the complete ending.
  • Confirm which announcements or introductions belong in the release and whether any unintended material remains.
  • Set an intentional track sequence and transitions; record the exact final filenames and durations.
  • Check that titles and live-version information accurately describe the performance.
  • Keep audio distribution separate from any concert-film or promotional clip permissions.

Identify this performance correctly

A newly captured performance is not the same recording as a studio master of the same song. Check the appropriate identifiers for the new recording rather than reusing the studio ISRC because the title matches. Use the identifier guide and retain the relationship between the song, live performance and release package. A code cannot guarantee profile placement or preserved listening statistics.

An original live-EP example

A band chooses three songs from a concert. Its working sheet names the approved mix of each performance, the guest musician on one song and the permissions still to confirm for a cover. The band resolves those questions before submitting the EP. This is a hypothetical preparation record, not an assertion that every venue uses the same contract or that one licence covers all territories.

Prepare the DistroBolt submission

In the approved portal, use the verified New Release → Audio Release entry route and prepare the requested files and release information. Confirm how to represent the particular live version, artist roles and identifiers in the current form. Ask the team about unclear fields. An accepted upload is one stage; review, delivery and the live store result still need checking. See the final-audio checklist.

Check after delivery

Open the actual release and verify the intended artist profile, version description, track order and audio. Report a specific discrepancy with links and release references. Keep the original performance and rights records for future questions. Reporting and payments follow the actual agreements and available statements; neither the concert date nor the number of attendees establishes a guaranteed streaming income.

Common questions

Can I use the studio ISRC for a new live performance?

A different recorded performance needs its own identification review. The same composition title does not make it the same recording.

Does permission to perform a cover clear a live album?

Do not assume so. Check the permissions for recording, distribution, territories and any video uses separately.
