RELEASE PREPARATION AND RIGHTS RECORDS

ISWC, IPI and ISRC: keep songwriter and recording identifiers separate

An ISWC identifies a musical work, an IPI identifies an interested party in rights administration, and an ISRC identifies a recording. Keep them in separate fields and verify the correct work, person and version before using them in release or royalty records.

Start with the thing being identified

  • Musical work: the song or composition, which can be performed and recorded in different ways.
  • Interested party: a person or organisation involved in the work’s rights, with the relevant administrative identity.
  • Recording: one particular recorded performance or version.
  • Release package: a single, EP or album can have its own release identifier, separate from its tracks.

One artist can participate in several of these records. Matching names alone does not make the identifiers interchangeable.

What the official identifier systems describe

The ISWC authority describes a permanent identifier for the musical work, not for its recordings or ownership percentages. CISAC describes IPI as identifying parties such as composers and publishers in rights-administration exchanges. IFPI’s ISRC identifies a recording. These identifiers help connect records; having a code does not itself establish permission, settle a disputed share or guarantee payment.

Build a private identifier worksheet

  • Approved work title and known alternative titles.
  • Writer names, roles and identifiers as confirmed by the relevant society or representative.
  • The work’s ISWC where one has been assigned, with the source checked.
  • Relevant publisher or administrator and the scope of representation.
  • Each recording title, version and ISRC using that work.
  • Release package references and links, held separately from the work and party identifiers.
  • Any discrepancy, missing value and the person responsible for resolving it.

An original example

Two writers create one song. It is recorded as a studio single and later as a live performance. Their work record can refer to the composition identifier, while the two different recordings need their own recording records. The writers’ administrative party identifiers identify the people rather than either audio file. This is a hypothetical explanation, not an assignment of real codes or a decision about the writers’ ownership shares.

If a number is missing or two records disagree

Check the relevant society, publisher, administrator or previous official record before filling the gap. Keep the title, names, version and source beside the number. Mark an unknown value clearly; do not copy a code from a similarly named song or create a plausible-looking number. Ask the responsible representative about a duplicate or incorrect work record rather than inventing a replacement to force a match.

How this fits DistroBolt distribution

DistroBolt’s recording delivery and recording-income splits serve a different purpose from a society’s composition records. Use the identifiers actually requested by the current release process and ask about an unclear field. Do not put an ISWC or a writer’s IPI into an ISRC field. This guide does not promise that distribution automatically assigns every work or party identifier or registers all publishing rights.

Use the right route for the question

For an unchanged recording changing distributor, use the ISRC and transfer guide. For composition registration and representation, prepare the publishing record. For a financial discrepancy, identify the right and statement source using the reporting guide. Accurate identifiers help an enquiry, while the applicable agreement, usage and accounting determine what is due.

Common questions

Is an ISWC the same as a track’s ISRC?

No. The work and the recorded version are different records, even when their titles match.

Does an identifier prove my royalty percentage?

No. Confirm the actual rights and payment arrangements separately; a code is not a share agreement or payment guarantee.
