Remix or cover: decide which permissions to investigate

A cover and a remix can require different permission investigations. Start with the source of the audio and the changes to the work rather than choosing a convenient genre or version label.

Describe how the new recording was made

List whether the production contains an existing master, stems supplied by another party, a newly performed song or changed lyrics and melody. A new performance of an existing song is different from reworking its original recorded stems. The word cover or remix on a filename does not settle those facts.

Map recording and composition separately

Identify the relevant master and underlying musical work. Ask which permissions cover the actual recording process and proposed distribution. Changes to lyrics, translation or adaptation can raise additional questions; do not assume an ordinary cover route resolves every change. Applicable rules and licences depend on the jurisdiction and use.

Avoid clearance shortcuts

Permission to download stems, a producer credit or a royalty split does not automatically establish all release rights. Obtain the appropriate approval and terms for the exact use. Where the position is unclear, seek relevant legal or licensing advice before distribution rather than presenting a platform acceptance as proof of clearance.

Approve the final release brief

Keep the audio version, credits, identifiers, permission evidence, territories and restrictions together. Ask DistroBolt to confirm supported delivery and document requirements for the actual project. A distributor may impose eligibility conditions beyond legal clearance. Do not promise Content ID eligibility or universal store acceptance merely because the recording is described as a cover or remix.
