Spotify Canvas: prepare a visual loop and check artist access

Spotify Canvas is a short visual loop associated with a track in Spotify’s mobile listening experience. Prepare an authorised asset and use the eligible artist team’s tools; it is separate from distributing the recording.

Check whether the artist can add it

Spotify’s current guidance describes access for eligible main-artist relationships with Admin or Editor permission. The web route is Spotify for Artists → Music → choose the track → Add Canvas; the mobile tools offer a Canvas option on the track. Check the actual track and available control. A featured credit, a distributor login or a paid plan is not a substitute for the required artist-tool access.

Prepare the right kind of asset

Spotify currently specifies a 3–8 second vertical loop, 9:16, with a height of 720–1080 pixels, using an accepted MP4 or JPG file. Check its current upload requirements before export. A square release cover and a long promotional video are different assets; simply uploading one in another field does not make it a valid Canvas.

Write a focused creative brief

  • Name the exact artist and track and the visual idea it should support.
  • Choose imagery you are authorised to use, including footage, people, artwork and any licensed elements.
  • Plan how the end returns to the start so the repeated loop feels intentional.
  • Keep essential details away from edges and preview on a phone-sized display.
  • Avoid harsh flashing or an edit that depends on perfect lyric sync in a short loop.
  • Keep the original source and approved export separate from social-video variants.

An asset example

An artist uses an approved close-up of a moving stage light with a smooth return to the first frame. They preview the loop repeatedly and inspect its crop at phone size before upload. This is an original creative example, not a claim that every concert image is cleared or that a specific style increases streams.

Test the actual result

Use the authorised team’s available upload control, inspect any error and check the result in a supported listening context. A Canvas is not visible in every possible view or device setting. Keep the file properties and error text if it does not appear; distinguish a failed upload from a playback-display question. Do not repeatedly change artist roles to obtain a missing button.

Keep other video and rights tasks separate

A Canvas does not replace a music video, YouTube Short, release artwork or lyric submission. Permission for a still image or song recording may not cover the proposed moving visual. Use the visual-use rights checklist to identify what needs review before publishing.

What DistroBolt can help clarify

We can discuss the release identity, delivery question and available creative-service scope. This guide does not promise an integrated DistroBolt Canvas uploader, included Canvas production or instant Spotify team access. Confirm any optional work in writing. The artist-access guide explains the separate team process; Canvas views are not a royalty statement or guaranteed audience growth.

Common questions

Is Canvas the same as sending audio to Spotify?

No. Audio delivery and the artist team’s visual-loop workflow are separate.

Does DistroBolt Premium automatically make a Canvas for me?

No included Canvas-production service is confirmed here. Ask about any optional creative brief and its actual terms.
