PRACTICAL ARTIST RELEASE WORK

Write an artist biography people can understand and verify

Explain the artist, the music and the current project with specific checked facts. Prepare versions for the actual destination, then remove unsupported achievements and information you do not intend to make public.

Start with the reader’s question

A listener needs to understand what the music is and where to begin. A journalist or booker may also need a current project and a reliable contact. Choose that purpose before writing. An artist biography is not a complete life history or a list of promotional adjectives. Put the strongest relevant introduction first rather than making the reader work through unrelated background.

Create a small fact sheet

Record the artist’s public name, musical role, current release title and status, relevant collaborators and a few distinctive creative details. Verify dates, credits and permission to name other people. Distinguish a planned release from one already available. If you mention coverage or an achievement, retain its source privately and describe it accurately; do not invent press quotes, awards or audience totals.

Write a short core, then expand selectively

Build a concise introduction around a musical description and one concrete detail. Add the current project and a useful next action. For a longer version, explain the work rather than padding it with claims such as best or fastest-growing. Keep the artist’s preferred public identity consistent across the website, press kit and profiles, while leaving private personal details out unless their publication is intentional and appropriate.

Adapt to the destination’s real limits

Spotify currently permits Admins and Editors to update a biography with up to 1,500 characters, not words. Its web workflow uses View Profile, About and Edit beside Bio. Other platforms have their own sources and editing routes; do not assume one edit changes every service. Test the displayed version and any supported links, then record which destination was actually updated.

Keep one approved biography record

Store the approved text, its intended use and review date. Make shorter versions from that record without changing the facts. If a translation is needed, check the meaning, public names and current release status with someone who can review that language. Use the press-kit guide to package the biography and the profile-access guide for supported account steps.

Keep a useful working record

  • Reader and destination
  • Verified public facts and current release status
  • Short introduction with one specific musical detail
  • Destination length, links and actual editing route checked
  • Approved text/version and next review trigger

Use these fields in your own project notes. This is an original preparation worksheet, not an upload form or a request to submit private information here.

An illustrative working example

Original hypothetical example: “North Window is a fictional acoustic duo built around close harmonies and short narrative songs. Its planned EP, Harbour Rooms, follows four conversations in one coastal town. Start with the current listening preview or contact the project’s public booking address.” A real artist must replace these invented facts; this is a writing model, not an endorsement or customer biography.

Common questions

Do I need to publish private family or legal-name details?

Write around the intended public artist identity and relevant work. Do not include private information just to make the text longer.

Will a longer biography rank better?

Length is not a ranking guarantee. Make the information useful, accurate and appropriate to the actual destination.
