A band member leaves: protect the catalogue and agreed income

A band member leaving creates several separate decisions: future participation, account administration, existing recordings and agreed income. Do not erase historical credits or accepted shares merely because the current line-up changes.

Inventory the existing arrangements

List affected recordings, contributor roles, ownership or licence agreements, accepted splits and outstanding accounting. Keep future projects separate from recordings already released. WIPO’s music-business guidance discusses personnel changes and band agreements; the actual signed documents remain the starting point for the specific band.

Review access without deciding ownership

Identify who currently administers distribution, artist profiles and shared project files. Use a documented, authorised access review where needed. Do not share passwords or assume that removing a login transfers copyright. Preserve relevant records and a contact route for the departing collaborator’s legitimate accounting questions.

Agree catalogue treatment explicitly

Discuss whether existing releases remain available, who may approve updates and how future income is handled under the actual agreements. A new band member does not automatically inherit the former member’s rights or share. Seek appropriate advice if the documents or parties disagree; do not settle the issue through a compensating portal percentage.

Implement only authorised changes

Prepare a dated change record naming the recordings, approvals, effective period and supported account actions. Ask DistroBolt about the actual process and preserve historical statements. Keep new-release credits accurate for who participated. No automatic share cancellation, takedown or ownership transfer is established by a change in band membership.
